First year lessons from building a corporate gift business in Portugal

When we started The Local Story, I thought gifting was simple.
You choose beautiful Portuguese products, curate them carefully, present them well. People buy.

That's what I thought. But reality is so far from this thought.

Gifting is rarely about the products. It's about… hesitation.

This past year, I've had dozens of conversations that all sounded different, but meant kind of the same thing.

  • "What if they don't like it?"
  • "Is this too much?"
  • "Is this enough?"
  • "Does this represent us well?"
  • "Will it arrive on time?"

Behind every gift order, there's uncertainty. And honestly - that makes sense.

When you send a gift, you're sending a message about yourself.

I've seen this with companies welcoming new team members, with businesses hosting international guests in Portugal, with people sending something to someone they haven't seen in months.

The common thread? They don't want something expensive. They want something right. It has to be right tone, right quality, right feeling.

And here's what I've learned:
Generic feels safe, but it's forgettable. Intentional on the other hand feels risky, but it's remembered.

And when a gift reflects care, I mean, - real care, from real producers, people feel it immediately.

They slow down when opening it. They notice the details. They keep it. Well, they keep even the box.

That's why I focus on small Portuguese producers. Because when I know where something comes from, when I know who made it, I can stand behind it without hesitation.
And that confidence is what people are actually buying. Not just the box. But the feeling of choosing well.

If you're hesitating before sending a gift, that's normal. It means you care.

The good news?
When something is thoughtfully curated, beautifully presented, and is genuine - the decision becomes easier.
And the moment lands the way it should.
